  • Is the medication recommended intended to treat a curable problem or will you use it to manage symptoms of a chronic problem? Essential oils can be effective in either instance, but your decision concerning your options will differ based on the length of your treatment phase.
  • Have you had positive or negative experiences with essential oils in the past? If you have used essential oils for other reasons, medical or otherwise, and you had a negative reaction, you might be allergic. This can vary from oil to oil, so do not assume if you are allergic to one, all are out of the question. Just be sure to let your doctor know of your previous bad reaction.

Whether or not essential oils can replace pharmaceuticals for treating a disease or condition varies from person to person and circumstance to circumstance. When in doubt, research your options, speak with your doctor, and make your decision based on sound medical evidence.


Cajuput oil garners less attention than many other oils, but it can be an important part of an essential oil collection. Once you have a selection of basic oils: citrus, eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender, you can branch out to oils that are just as powerful, but not as widely used.

Cajuput oil comes from the myrtaceous tree. This type of tree is found in the warmest areas in Australia and throughout the Malay Peninsula and Archipeligo. The oil in its purest form has an unpleasant odor that smells similar to camphor or turpentine. Cajuput is related to tea tree oil and like tea tree, may be effective for battling staph infections.

In addition to fighting infection and easing muscular aches and pain, cajuput oil is also helpful for healing headaches. It is a strong antiseptic and can be used for treating the common cold and flu. Some people also find it effective for easing bronchitis, laryngitis, and other respiratory problems.

Since cajuput oil is helpful in treating a variety of ailments, it is one of the most versatile oils available. It is considered a medicinal oil and is not usually recommended for those new to essential oils. Though it is unlikely cajuput will cause problems, especially if it is mixed properly with a base oil and ingested in the recommended dosage, it is still a good idea to do your research and be sure you understand the risks associated with the oil. As with all medicinal oils, you may want to work with an experienced aromatherapist until you are familiar with the effects of various oils.
